‘Coming Together’ in an official presentation at Venice Biennale has suddenly generated significant amount of enthusiasm and optimism among artist community across India and Pakistan.

Speaking of significance of pairing, Rashid Rana says, ‘I wish for the Indian subcontinent to be a space akin to the European Union, where individuals for neighbouring countries can have freedon of movement and ideas’, according to the ‘Art newspaper report.’

Rana also says, ‘Initiatives such as this project may prove to be a journey towards the realization of this dream, which may not come true in my lifetime, but I hope that it does in my son's."

Why this pairing of Shilpa and Rana important can best understood by the fact that it follows years of poor representation at Venice Biennale. India's first official representation at the international contemporary art extravaganza was not until 2011 and in 2013, India did not return.

Pakistan's last participation in the Biennale was reportedly in 1956, according to the spokesman for next year’s project.

The Biennale will be held in Venice from May 9 to November 22, 2015.
