Yesterday I and Chintan Upadhyay were roughed up and detained by Jaipur Police for defending and refusing to take down a sculpture installation made by one of Sandarbh International Artists' Residency artist Siddhartha Kararwal at Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur.
The sculpture titled Divine Bovine, as the artist said, is about relationship between humans and animals in urban environment. It highlights the plight of cows and other animals who are abandoned on the streets and forced to scavenge.
Many times these animals end of eating plastic litter and
choke to death. But this work allegedly hurt 'sentiments of some people'. While
we were in police custody, the sculpture was dismantled and removed from the
site. Later some group of protesters arrived at the site and garlanded the cow
and shouted slogans Gai Hamari Mata Hai. This is where we are.
